What is long-distance sponsorship?

Sponsoring a dog means choosing to support one particular animal, or an association’s work more broadly, through a regular or one-off donation. Unlike adoption, the dog doesn’t come to live with you: it stays at the shelter or in a foster home, cared for and surrounded by people, while it waits for its new life.

At Wild Sun Rescue, we take in dogs from the streets of Essaouira — strays, injured or abandoned. We treat them, neuter them, help them socialise, and then search for a family for each one, whether in France, elsewhere in Europe, or locally. Sponsorship helps us keep that promise: Rescue, Heal, Support.

What your support actually pays for

Your sponsorship is anything but abstract. Every euro turns into very concrete help for a dog:

• Veterinary care: check-ups, vaccines, treatments, and sometimes surgery after an accident.
• Food: daily meals, suited to puppies as much as to older or recovering dogs.
• Neutering: an essential step for the animal’s health and for keeping the number of street dogs down.
• Shelter: a safe, warm place, far from the dangers of the street.

In Morocco, the issue of stray dogs is taken seriously. The country runs a national programme known as TNVR (“Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release”), governed since 2019 by an agreement bringing together the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Health, ONSSA and the Order of Veterinarians. The dogs caught are neutered, vaccinated against rabies, dewormed, then identified and released. The challenges are real — the cost of the programme, the limited number of trained vets — and this is exactly where associations and their sponsors make the difference.

Who is sponsorship for?

Sponsoring a dog in Morocco is for anyone who wants to take action without being able to welcome an animal into their home. The reasons are many, and all of them are valid:

• You live in a flat, you travel often, or your schedule doesn’t allow for a constant presence.
• You already share your home with other animals, or your budget won’t stretch to a full adoption.
• You’re not sure you can commit for fifteen years, but you want to help right now.

There’s no reason to feel guilty: not adopting doesn’t mean doing nothing. Sponsorship is precisely a way to help on your own terms, without an overwhelming commitment.

A real bond and news of your sponsored dog

Sponsoring isn’t only about giving. It’s also about following a dog, watching it change, heal, and regain its confidence. We regularly share news of the animals in our care: photos, short videos, milestones in their recovery, and of course the best message of all — the day your sponsored dog finally finds its family.

This long-distance emotional bond is often what moves our sponsors the most. You’re following a story, yours as much as the dog’s. And if one day you’d like to go further, adoption is still possible — even if it takes patience.

What if you wanted to adopt one day?

Bringing a dog from Morocco to France is subject to strict rules: identification by microchip, vaccination against rabies, a mandatory rabies antibody test at an approved laboratory, then a passport or health certificate. You should allow at least four to five months to gather all the documents. Going through a reputable association is essential, as we handle these steps from start to finish. Since these rules change regularly, we encourage you to check the regulations in force at the time of your project.
